<p>   Before I get back to eliminating misconceptions about <b><a target='_blank' href="http://www.bipolardisorderdepressionanxiety.com/bipolar-disorder/">bipolar disorder</a></b>, I would like to talk a little bit about <b>words</b>. As a writer, I eat words for breakfast. <b> <i>Language can be powerful</i></b>. Language doesn`t help us define facts, it MAKES them. Poor little Pluto is not a planet anymore. Why? We SAY it isn`t.   </p>
<p>  <b>Whacko. Nutcase. Lunatic. Psycho. Freak.</b>  </p>
<p> Those words can be particularly powerful when used with evil intention. A few of you reading this might be upset by me referring to people who suffer from bipolar disorder as whackos. This is understandable. Those words can seriously hurt, particularly when they come from a &#8220;friend.&#8221; Trust me. I know. </p>
<p>  <b>Just as words can make meaning, they can be meaningless.</b>   It relies on two things: the person who&#8217;s saying them and his or her intention. Let me give you an example. </p>
<p> As a writer, I spend most of my time inside. I&#39;m 1/8th Cherokee, so I might tan tell if I ever saw the sun . The reminder of my ancestry is European. Basically, my skin is as white as the driven snow. Now I am going to say a word and then dive for cover. </p>
<p>  <b>Nigger.</b>  </p>

<p> That word was employed by whites to oppress blacks for far to long. My people used that word as a weapon, and boy was it an effective one. It was the neutron bomb of the English language. That word was used to cause shame. That&#8217;s why I feel embarrassed just saying it </p>
<p> <b> </b><b>Nonetheless,</b> the N-word (sorry I can&#8217;t bring myself to type it again) is only <b>a weapon</b> when  it&#8217;s  used like one. Watch any film,  go to any club, walk down any street and  you`ll hear black people saying it to one another, using it like a term of endearment. It&#8217;s OK for them to say it, because  they ARE  it. For me to say it? Not OK.  I`ll doubtless get away with it this one time because my Desire isn`t to  harm,  but to help. Or at the very least   I am  hoping I am able to. If not, <b><i>I sincerely apologize.</i></b></p>
<p> <b> Being bipolar, the  character  of our  sickness   guarantees  that  we are   an emotional  bunch,  </b> but let&#8217;s try to not be too sensitive about words. They can only harm us if we let them. Let&#8217;s  begin with the one I dislike  the most: </p>
<p> <b> Freak. </b> </p>
<p> Freak freak freak freak FREAK FREAK FREAK!!! </p>
<p> If I say that word  out loud,   again and again,  it  begins  to sound like  a nonsense  word, something I just made up. The more  I  use it, the less it  means.  <b> The less it  means  the less power it has over me</b><b>. </b> </p>
<p> <b> Try it for yourself.  </b> Pick the one word you  despise the most and say it over and over. Make that word just as dead as the not-a-planet Pluto, but don&#8217;t  forget that your word isn&#8217;t dead to  everybody. If someone else has a problem with that word,  don&#8217;t say it around them. <b>It is all  about kindness, folks. It&#8217;s  that simple.</b></p>
<p> Well, once  more,   I am  over word count. And I haven&#8217;t even  discussed  one  myth,  but I  may  have just dispelled one. </p>
<p> <b> Bipolar  Parable  3: &#8220;Being bipolar makes you a bad person.&#8221;</b></p>
<p> I am bipolar. If  I was a bad person, would  I make such an effort as I did to avoid offending the black community? Nope. I&#8217;d be  screaming  the N-word from the  roof without shame. </p>
<p> <b> There are  people out there who are scared of folks with bipolar disorder due to actions of  a few  select people.</b>Yes, there are some who really are wicked, vicious people who  are  dangerous  to others, but there are  many, MANY most wicked people who DON`T have bipolar disorder.  Most of us are rather like  you. Some of us, and  I am  not naming names here, are gentle,  loving dads who try  to not  let their  children  see them cry during Disney flicks.</p>
<p> OK. It&#8217;s me. I do that. Pathetic, right? Well  <b> this  whole  article has been about  liberating yourself  from shame, </b>  so I  might  as well come out of the closet. Disney  pictures  make me cry sometimes. That fact may actually make me a freak. Having bipolar disorder, however, does not. </p>

<p>It has a very far reaching impact on sufferers. Social situations are viewed with abject dread (many preferring to remain cocooned in their little shell). And public speaking, should the need arise, is an absolute nightmare, in which nerves become grossly over exaggerated, as do reflexes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a condition that has a number of symptoms. Sufferers not only dread any social event but they dread even the thought of having to attend one in the future. Symptoms include excessive trembling, a rapid heartbeat, profuse sweating, and constant blushing. But it&#8217;s the fear that gets sufferers most.</p>

<p>Learn the art of relaxation</p>
<p>Your mental state goes into overdrive very quickly and you need to learn how to establish a mindset to slow it down. But this is only the first step, amongst a number of other steps you need to enrol.</p>

<p>Just as there is a negative way to view every aspect of life so, equally, there is a positive way to do exactly the same thing.</p>
<p>You&#8217;re actually just the same as everyone else. You have the same brain and you have the same switching functionality. Only difference being your negative switch is turned on, and your positive switch turned off. It&#8217;s very simple, get your switching turned the other way (just like positive people have it set).</p>

<p>Trying to hide isn&#8217;t going to solve your problem. You need to face up to your dilemma. But just confronting the events which make you so uncomfortable is probably going to make you feel worse. But, if you learn how to re-program your switching first, you will be able to do anything you want.</p>
<p>It may be hard to appreciate right now but, by continuing to be socially inept, means that a great source of life&#8217;s enjoyment is unavailable to you and you&#8217;re missing out. The daft thing is, it&#8217;s easy to resolve, and you can start resolving it right away.</p>
<p>If you have a severe anxiety disorder you can seek professional help. Trouble is, many will just prescribe an antidepressant. You don&#8217;t really want this as it only suppresses the feeling for a while, has uncomfortable side effects, and is something on which you could become dependent. In other words, it leads to other problems (which will only add to your anxious state).</p>
<p>Another common traditional treatment is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which attempts to understand your psychological make-up when reacting to uncomfortable events. This enables the doctor to help train you to see outcomes differently and more constructively. It can be a very useful technique. But it doesn&#8217;t work for everybody.</p>
<p>However, thanks to tons of great research, over the past three decades, there are now many self-help programs which come with expert instruction and in which you can engage, by yourself, quietly in the privacy and comfort of your own home.</p>
