The most familiar phobias, such as fear of spiders (arachnophobia) and fear of confined spaces (claustrophobia), are well documented, and efforts to treat them are, more often than not, successful. There are a range of less common phobias, however, that can have an equally unpleasant impact on the lives of sufferers. This article looks at a few examples. </p>
<p>Coulrophobia is an abnormal or excessive fear of clowns. It is not unusual for children to suffer from coulrophobia, but it can also affect teenagers and adults. Often, a fear of clowns stems from an unpleasant experience, or sinister images in the media. As with many phobias, sufferers are usually aware of the irrationality of their fear, but may need professional help to overcome it.</p>
<p>A fear of being seen naked, and/or seeing other people naked is known as gymnophobia. Gymnophobes may fear nudity around certain individuals, or around everyone. Many experts attribute this phobia to feelings of inadequacy that arise from the unattainable body-images that saturate the media. In some cases, the fear may be symptomatic of a more generalised anxiety about sexuality. Many gymnophobes experience a continual feeling of defencelessness, constantly worrying that people who have seen them naked will continue to picture them in the nude.</p>
<p>A fear of new objects or experiences is known as neophobia (or cainotophobia). This generally manifests itself as an unwillingness to try new things or deviate from an established routine. The term has also taken on a looser cultural significance &#8211; some reactionary political groups that promote &#8216;traditional&#8217; ways of doing things are often described as neophobic. The fear of new technology (technophobia) is considered to be a specific form of neophobia.</p>
<p>Other peculiar phobias include fear of the moon (selenophobia), fear of seeing yourself in the mirror (spectrophobia) and fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth (arachibutyrophobia).</p>

<br />I am not an expert, but I have been diagnosed with social phobia.  Are you scared to go into stores because you can&#8217;t handle interacting with the person at the register?  Do you feel like it&#8217;s your job to make a restaurant&#8217;s waitstaff feel good/happy?  Are you scared to call people on the phone?  Are you scared to answer the phone?  Do you avoid almost everyone you know?  If you are &quot;shy&quot; around people you have known for a long time, then that is a good indication as well.  If you feel worn out from taking care of people&#8217;s emotions, then that may also be a sign of <a href="http://www.socialanxietycares.com" target=_self>social anxiety</a>.  Do you have a fear of what people will think of  you?  Even strangers?  Are you scared to be yourself?  Do you feel like you need to put a face on when interacting with people?  Like you may be having the worse day of your life, but you act like the happiest, most outgoing person when talking to the person selling you a movie ticket?  If you answer yes to some of these questions, then you are probably more likely to have social anxiety then be shy.  Being shy means you are slow to warm to people, but once you do then you feel at ease.  Good luck!</p>

<p>Having said that I&#8217;m guessing my definitions may differ from your definitions of shy and Narcissist.</p>
<p>Those with Narcissist Personality Disorder do not suffer from it &#8211; everyone else does. No, NPD folks will not spend their time glued to a mirror, they seek attention &amp; yea they can be insecure, my Ex husband certainly didn&#8217;t love himself. </p>
<p>But genuinely &quot;shy&quot;, yeah&#8230;. I knew one who&#8217;d deliberately be &quot;shy&quot;, She&#8217;d often openly hide under tables because she would get the attention she craved. Ignore it and she&#8217;d turn you into the next &quot;evil&quot; person she needed to be protected from.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ve always been envious of those people that can just talk really easily to new people they meet and don&#8217;t seem to get nervous at all.<br />
I have bad <a href="http://www.socialanxietycares.com" target=_self>social anxiety</a>, and its impossible for me to be myself when meeting new people, or be at all confident. I get really sick with anxiousness when I&#8217;m going somewhere I know a lot of people will be.<br />
I need to get over this because I&#8217;m going to college soon and no-one I know will be there..<br />
Is there anything I can do to stop this? Any tips&#8230;?<br />
<br />Take a speech class. This helpful, because you have to overcome it and everyone else is in the same boat. You are also thinking about other things, such as what you are speaking about, learning to become more organized and prepared around others, more composed, etc. Join some clubs where you can learn about something you are interested in, and be with others with similar interests. Volunteer to help others in some way. This will help you think of the people you are helping, and think less of your insecurities. It could be fun, too. Get a pet. They are nonjudgemental, help you get out with others (if it is a dog), fun when people say, &quot;What a cute dog&quot; and ask questions about the cutie. Or volunteer with a rescue league where you can help with the pets, but not own one if you are not in that position. Get more sleep, cut down on caffiene, eat a healthy diet, remember that we all have faults. We might be to short, too tall, fat, skinny (yes, they make fun of that, too), too talkative, too quiet, etc. You are you and you need to appreciate who you are. Try writing down everything about yourself you like or appreciate. Then, try thinking about these things, more often.</p>

Social anxiety isnt something you were born with, it is something you learned and we know you did not learn it deliberately. The good news is that it does not matter why you are so shy and anxious around people, the mental patterns, the imagined and real fears can be effectively dealt with using hypnosis and NLP.  Because we do not waste time talking about your childhood or the and things that have happened to you (if going over the past would have helped you would already be OK), and because we focus on what IS going on in your mind, on the habits you have learned, these techniques often bring about rapid, positive and lasting cure.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How do you overcome shyness to be more at ease in social situations? I have been this way all my life and it seems it will never go away. I know everyone probably has this to some degree, but I think I have it to a ridiculous extent. It&#8217;s keeping me from finding a job (the thought of dealing with people I know I can&#8217;t handle), hanging out w/ friends (when I would be uncomfortable), living in the dorms (with strangers)&#8230; I know people are not concerned with me, or looking at me as much as I think they are, but I still have this anxiety.<br />
In class I won&#8217;t answer-it stops me from saying anything. It&#8217;s hard for me to speak when needed, and forget speeches..It would be so much easier for my life if I was just social, but even the thought of being a cashier at a store-it makes me nervous. It&#8217;s like a bomboarding feeling to me, I already feel inferior to people for some reason..how might one hold a job with this? Though that is my primary concern, how can one overcome shyness in general?<br />
<br />i had this problem for many years and it held me back from doing so much in my life.  what i did and this will sound stupid i know&#8230;i would think of someone who i knew personally who was able to handle the situation i was going into&#8230;and i would pretend i was them&#8230;i would use their mannerisms and would act like i felt they would act.  it takes a while to get it down pat&#8230;but it actually does work&#8230;now i am in situations and the person i want to act like is me&#8230;and i am very comfortable presenting to people even in different languages now&#8230;previously i would shake so bad a couple of times i went into seizures&#8230;just take your time and do small doses&#8230;start with your doctor&#8230;and be assertive&#8230;what is the worst thing that could happen?  you would be embarrased? you already are anyway so nothing to lose&#8230;good luck!</p>
