Rarely do i feel anxious socially, but when I do, my throat feels like it has a lump in it and is tight. Does anyone know how to get past these social anxiety problems and throat tightness?

Hi Jake
It happens to me also. My Doc said to breath deep through my nose 4sec in 4sec hold 4sec exhale etc. It works for me. He said it gives more ox to the brain so it can think better. I do it before I go into and while I`m in a store etc, Try it.

This debilitating disorder has its source largely in trauma, sustained early in life. Critical, judgemental upbringings along with repetitive violent communication tend to traumatize people leaving their nervous systems overly sensitive. The person becomes hypervigilent and overly attuned to the outside voices. Their self esteem suffers and an inferiority complex may ensue. While understanding the sources of social anxiety is important, the reality is that the patterns and the neural pathways are already in place thus demanding a cognitive undoing of the condition.

I have had social anxiety disorder for about 5 years now. I have even filed for SSI because I just can’t seem to overcome it, and it definately affects my day-to-day life. However my education is leading me to a very social career path, and I really need to work to get over this anxiety problem. I never used to be like this before I had my first child, and I don’t know why I can’t seem to shake it now. What sort of things can I do to possibly ease myself back into being social?
Oh, and the reason I don’t want medication is because I’ve tried 2-3 meds and either they haven’t worked, or I become a zombie. I have 3 young children to take care of, I can’t be experimenting with meds.

Try to gradually work with yourself in getting into social situations. Do one on one contacts, just being a part of a group, knowing several people together, larger groups etc. The idea is to succeed with less difficult situations and gradually gain some confidence that you are willing to try the next step.

My social Worker referred me to an MD ( I think it’s an MD ) to give me social anxiety medicine. My anxiety is pretty bad and I have an appointment tommorow with one of them there. Do you think I could get the medicine tomorrow ?! How long will it take?

Probably, but it won’t cure a thing. Medicines for mental disorders do nothing to fix the problem. All they do is numb your mind a little making things appear to be easier to cope with. If you want a lasting and satisfying cure, look into cognitive therapy and learn how to confront the cause of the anxiety. Here’s a good start:

I’m 16 years old and have social anxiety. I had it for 3 years and hate it. I have no friends at all and want to fit in and live a normal teen life. Can social anxiety be overcome without medication? How do become social anxiety? I want to have friends but I’m too scare and shy to talk to people. Let’s say there’s somebody i want to be friends with and sits next to me. How do I get their attention? Besides asking them for a pencil, what else can I say?

Force yourself to overcome this.

When they are sitting next to you, smile and say hi, tell them your name. "Hi, I’m (insert name), how are you doin today?" If a girl, say hey I really like your earrings, shirt, were did ya get it? If your in class make small talk "man this class sucks or this is so boring". When you talk look them in the eyes (even if you blush) just have a conversation. If you have to pretend they are a sibling or someone you feel comfortable with and just talk.

It will take practice but eventually you will overcome most of it.

Thanks to everyone who made a video. 55 people from 13 countrys now thats amazing, can’t thank you guys enough.
