Understanding and Dealing With Social Anxiety

Anxiety BC – http://anxietybc.com/index.php

When anxiety causes distress or interference that is much greater than anxiety experienced by other children of the same age, it may be called an anxiety disorder. In this case, the term “disorder” simply indicates that the anxiety problem is significant enough and has lasted long enough (usually at least a number of weeks or months) to be considered a problem that warrants intervention. Commonly, children and teens experience anxiety problems that are characteristic of more than one anxiety disorder. Fortunately, the helpful approaches are similar for various anxiety problems.

If your child has been diagnosed as having a mild to moderate anxiety disorder, it will most likely fit into this list of seven anxiety disorders and subtypes:

Separation Anxiety Disorder
Specific Phobias
social anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Panic Disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Instead of fighting my anxiety, trying to treat it and using whatever other methods that haven’t worked for me in the past, I’m now embracing, accepting and loving my social anxiety. And not only that, I’m also asking for more social anxiety! Yep! I try to get myself in awkward situations that used to dread, I try to sounds dumb, I try to stutter, I try to sound awkward…I try to look mean, bored, uninteresting, I’m looking for ways to provoke my social anxiety whenever I go out now.

A few things that make the social anxiety patient fearful and stressed are:

• Being teased or criticized
• Getting to meet new people
• Having all the attention
• Seeing people who work in authorities position (some important people like supervisor)
• Being watched while working on something
• Most of the social gatherings
• Having interpersonal relations, friendly or romantic

You might be having social anxiety if these symptoms apply to you and the way you feel being social. Don’t lose hope and think that you are the only person having this problem and no one will come forward to help you. There are quite a few types of successful social anxiety medicine available today.

Cognitive-behavior therapy is one of the leading successful types of social anxiety treatments available today. Basically, cognitive behavior works with the brain and how and what we think. Since how we feel seems to be the major part on social anxiety, this therapy is a really good way of treatment for social anxiety. It teaches us on new ways of thinking and how to behave in social places. Cognitive behavior is widely used and is being recommended by lots of psychologists and therapists.

Cognitive behavior therapy has a chance to produce some long term changes in our lives but only when used consistently and hence this cognitive behavior therapy has been very successful as a treatment for social anxiety. But this result can be obtained provided the patient has no such health issues as dementia, brain damage, Alzheimer’s disease which might contribute to social anxiety. This cognitive behavior therapy will tell upon many types of cognitive times in our lives, which helps with our beliefs and new thoughts that comes up in our brain.

Medication is another treatment for social anxiety which is most of the times recommended with cognitive behavior therapy. Anti-anxiety, anti-depressant drugs, beta-blockers are few types of medications for physical symptoms which are helpful for social anxiety. Though there might be a feeling on the 1st day of taking the anti-depressant, it takes a few weeks for the drugs to act on the brain and the body and produce an actual effect on you. Medication actually just helps to lessen the anxiety while undergoing the therapy and does not completely cure the social anxiety. Medication must not be taken in your treatment for social anxiety alongside with the therapy. The therapy can be availed as an individual or group therapy. Only a trained therapist can recommend what you need best based on the needs.

Just wondering if my children are doomed because "mom" has social Phobia. They are 3 and 4… they both have speech delays because I was never able to get them out.

Now they are in full-day preschool/daycare while I am now starting therapy!

I hope they won’t end up like me :(
I guess my question is, "Do my children still have a chance to become social people, even though they both have speech delays?" Our daughter is almost 5 and still can not string words together to have a "conversation" with…. I know I am to blame for this because she hasn’t gotten out of the house until 6 weeks ago when we decided to put them in full day preschool/daycare.

You have identified your problem so they are not likely to be "doomed." You can always talk to their teachers and school counselors to get some guidance on this too. They are not doomed.

Also schools usually have a specialist to help with speech delays, at least in my memory of elementary school.

(this doesn’t answer your direct question but I think this way of putting it will be useful to you along with other people’s answers)

Ever since I was a child I’ve been the quiet non-social type. Even today at the age of 21 I only have a couple close friends and am extremely shy. I often wonder if it’s social anxiety or just simply extreme shyness. It’s hard for me to initiate conversations with people, I hate when people compliment me sometimes, I feel awkward sometimes in public. I try to get out on weekends, but mostly by myself or with just one friend.

I also suffer from panic attacks from time to time, but is rarely initiated from social situations

I don’t know if there’s a better clinical explanation, but to me shyness is just one way of avoiding social anxiety. Shyness is more of a personal trait of yours, whereas anxiety can be seen as more of a condition.

There’s a lot of things that can make you shy or at least appear to be. Most of the time I think it all just branches from being very self-conscious. If you worry about how you look, how you come off, how you sound, you will be very uncomfortable in any social situation.

But if you do feel really nervous talking to people or even just being around them you probably have some kind of anxiety. I used to be like this. I’m more comfortable but I’m still bad at conversation. Anxiety is something you can really feel. You need to just put yourself out there to know. I personally don’t think it’s too relevant to know if it’s anxiety. The most you can get from that diagnosis is some pills, and I honestly think those do more harm than good.

It takes time and practice really to get over it. I don’t see it as being too much of a problem. If you have some friends and you’re happy with them, that’s great. I think too many friends can just a hassle. It’s the really good ones that count, and those are few. If you are having non-related panic attacks then that is something else, but still important to look at.

uncomfortableness just taking action? I mean not thinking about situations, just going ahead and doing them? Jobs, clubs everything?

When i was 13 to 16, i faced major anxiety, to a point where i didn’t even want to go out.

From personal experience, you need to fake the confidence until you gain it, and tell your self it’ll be fine. Think about someone thats close, mum, dad, boyfriend. If you don’t sort it out, you’ll always have fears, they’ll eventually take over your life, if not sorted.

Just get on with life, your just another human being, there are millions of people just like you, that think different and have a great life, regardless of appearance and anything else.

Am planning to apple to medical school at oxford or cambridge in december but i am suffering from quite bad social anxiety disorder. I never speak unless sum1 talks 2 me and am really anxious in class and around people . I need to start more extra curricular activites, volunterring, work experience etc but my social anxiety makes this so difficult. What should I do ?

Try to force yourself to think about it so much, like think about something else..try talking to yourself, and tell yourself "you can do it" over and over inside your head..and try to make overcoming your fears one of your goals. Just think about this whats the worst thing that could happen if your put yourself out there, not everyone will always like you, but so what who cares about everyone, and if anything happens people are usually so worried about there own problems they forget about others..You can do it I believe in you..Remember u only live once u mind as well make the best of it, dont have anything like anxeity take over your life you gotta to be stronger then that and just think positive, and if you start thinking alot about one thing try to just shut yourself, you just gotta to force yourself and challenge yourself..I hope this helps, now this should work, but if you want the easy way out I guess you can go on some anti-anxiety pills, but u have to kno they dont fix the problem if anythin theyll add a new problem since all pills come with side effects/
