I am shy and sometimes anxious about going out in social events and I dont have a lot of friends. Some people think that means I am Asperger’s. I do not because I have met people with Asperger’s and their personal style is different. Can someone explain to me what they think the difference is between shyness and Asperger’s syndrome?

Shyness is a discomfort or inhibition in social situations that interferes with one’s career goals or social goals. Social Anxiety is defined as having severe and unreasonable fear of social situations. The only real difference between shyness and social anxiety is the severity of the condition. social anxiety is more severe. Asperger’s syndrome is really something completely different. Asperger’s syndrome is an autistic spectrum disorder where the person has difficulties in social interaction, speech problems, has interest in very few or only one area/s (such as trains or astronomy), as well as unusual responses to the environment

Has anyone tried it? Did it help/work?

Contrary to what first poster wrote, hypnotherapy works better with smarter people as it simply gets you to use your mind properly ie when it isn’t encumbered by doubts & self-recrimination.

Unlike CBT, hypnotherapy also works with illogical parts of the brain (most of it) and so can actually change things that CBT considers unchangeable.

If you go to a good hypnotherapist you’ll get tremendous results. If you go to a bad one you’ll be put off for life.

Please don’t list any benzodiazapenes.

Please list medications only, and no miracle cures. Please don’t answer if you dont have social anxiety and have never undergone treatment; in other words, dont post what you read on a website. I’m looking for honest answers from personal experience. Please don’t mention any kinds of "therapy" (cognitive, group, etc.) I’m only interested in medications, preferrably those currently available in the US.

I know that everyone responds differently to medicine, but I’m basically just asking what (if anything) has worked for you.

I was on Effexor and it seemed to help a little, but I had major mood swings. I switched to Wellbutrin and that has helped my anxiety greatly. The side effects were minimal and easy to deal with. I’m also currently on Seroquel which helps put my mind at ease at night, that also works pretty well, but I’ve had some short term memory issues with that one. It’s nothing I can’t deal with so I keep taking it because it works.

I get very very nervous around people i don’t know, and I would really really like to be more social but i end up getting anxiety about it, due to my stutter, as i do have a severe stutter. I never had social anxiety till after stopping the anti anxiety meds, in which i was on for general anxiety disorder.

Hi B,
I am so glad you got off the meds. All the things I have read about meds for anxiety and other disorders will just add other medical problems, like RLS.
It is not easy, but make your self get out at least three times a week,, in a mall, movie, park, just get out. Everyone has some kind of problem, and remember you are very smart. By typing this in here shows me you are brave. This place people are so judgemental, so if you get dumb responce in here just tell your self that person has a problem or he or she would not put you down, that should make you feel better knowing you are not along.
Good luck!!
